St. Clair County inmate fatality stabbed

SPRINGVILLE- The Alabama Department of Corrections is investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville on Sunday.   

Prison officials report the stabbing happened at approximately 6:45 p.m. when correctional officers found inmate Terry Pettiway, 29, unresponsive and suffering from a stab wound.  Pettiway was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and later died from his injuries. 

The Department of Corrections has identified an inmate as a suspect in the stabbing but is not releasing the person’s name pending the investigation. The circumstances that led to the fatal stabbing remain unclear at this time.

Pettiway was serving a 10-year sentence on a 2013 conviction for discharging a gun in an occupied building and vehicle in Montgomery County.
