As an adult, how are your spelling skills? Still sharp, no doubt. But, aside from printing off that Facebook quiz, there’s just no way to prove to a room full of people that you are as good as advertised.
Not until tonight, that is.
On Thursday, March 10, the St. Clair County Chapter of The Literacy Council of Alabama will host the Great Grown Up Spelling Bee at the Pell City Center for Education and the Performing Arts (CEPA) at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature teams of three squaring off for fun prizes, and proceeds support adult basic literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs in St. Clair County.
“Its great night filled with friendly competition,” said Sonia Dale of The Literacy Council’s St. Clair chapter. “The best part is knowing that all the money raised will help support our programs that teach adults to read and speaking English, giving them a better life.”
Teams of three are needed to compete and the fee is $100 per team. In addition to the winning team, prizes will be given for best cheering section, most original team name and most unique team t-shirt or costume.
Mike Royer, former news anchor for WVTM-TV, will serve as the master of ceremonies.
For more information about how to compete or to become a sponsor, contact Dale at (205) 405-4003 or (205) 525-0097.
The Literacy Council supports basic literacy and ESOL services in Blount, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby and Walker Counties. For more, visit literacy-council.org.
