ormer city councilman of Leeds David Miller qualifies to run for mayor of Leeds.
A lifelong resident of Leeds and 1961 graduate of Leeds High School, Miller is familiar with issues concerns of Leeds’ residents.
“Every voice will be heard,” Miller said.
Miller holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from the University of Alabama, a Master’s Degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Auburn University and an EdS Degree in Educational Leadership and School Administration from Mississippi State University.
“I mention my education because each of those degrees is relevant to accomplishing the tasks which are needed to put Leeds on track to realize the great potential I visualize for our city,” Miller said. “I am pro-business and want to establish a working relationship with the citizens of Leeds and incorporate input from every sector into a plan to get our city moving forward.”
While Miller believes in the importance of education, he also understands that hands-on involvement with local businesses, government, community service, church and other leadership roles play a key role in influencing the attributes a mayor needs to lead a city, the most important attribute being “common sense.”
If elected mayor Miller will work to: Establish an “untouchable” and secure funding plan for city schools, change the culture of city government so that the government works for the citizens and treats them equally, replace the present zoning and sign ordinances with common sense statutes, open our doors for business and establish a business council of local business leaders, get finances under control by reducing legal fees (over $2 million spent to date on lawyers), assist in downtown business development and put city hall back downtown in a city complex next to the proposed new library to bring people to the city center, put qualified members on city boards and reopen the swimming pool, recycling center and senior center.
Mr. Miller retired in the rank of Commander from the US Navy in 1986, having served in numerous at sea assignments, and in Vietnam as Commanding Officer of River Assault Division 112 in the Mekong Delta where he was awarded the Cross of Gallantry with two Silver Stars and the Bronze Star.
Since his retirement, Miller has held various leadership roles within the Leeds community related to community service business development and planning boards. Miller is also currently serving as the National Chairman of the US Defense Industrial Association.
“My vision is to bring Leeds back to that safe, vibrant and thriving community I knew as a kid growing up here. We are ideally positioned to do this by working with our neighboring municipalities, the Regional Planning Commission, our local builders, our large landowners and developers and our unequalled attractions of Bass Pro, Barber Motorsports and Grand River. Together we can do this.”
