- Tax Extension
Tax Day has been pushed back this year to April 18. Even with the additional three days, some may still need an extension. Filing an extension is a fairly simple process, but one that needs to be done correctly. For Alabamians, the deadline for extension filing is April 18, as well.
The majority of the process is the same, whether it is being filed via mail or online. The first step in the process is to get an IRS Form 4868, the request for an automatic extension. The form is available online here.

After completing the form, applicants can send it through the mail or electronically. Filers can use the Free File, offered by the IRS to send in their completed form.
Upon filing of the extension formed, applicants are automatically given an extension of six months. This will make the deadline Oct. 17, 2016.
Extensions can also be granted by paying all or a fraction of the estimated taxes due, with applicants indicating the payment is for an extension. This can be done by using Direct Pay, which is an IRS online payment system. This can also be completed by paying with a debit or credit card.
For information on state tax extensions, visit the Alabama Department of Revenue’s website. Applicants will find a similar form, granting the same six-month extension.
