Pell City rail crossing damaged in derailment reopens to traffic

The Truss Ferry Road rail crossing in Pell City will reopen to traffic at 6:00 p.m. this evening, Norfolk Southern representatives have confirmed.

The rail crossing has been closed to vehicle traffic for the past several days following the derailment of 30 rail cars from a Norfolk Southern train on Friday

Asphalt is currently being laid for the temporary crossing, and the permanent replacement crossing will be installed in the coming weeks, Pell City City Manager Brian Muenger stated.

This will allow the truck traffic associated with cleanup efforts to access Highway 78 directly, said Muenger, alleviating the truck traffic that has been present on Golf Course Road and Dickey Drive since the derailment occurred.

Norfolk Southern personnel are continuing with their cleanup on adjacent properties, Muenger stated, but trains have continued to operate on the rail since it was placed back into service late Saturday evening.
