Texas policeman and wanted man shot by fellow officer trying to subdue suspect

WEATHERFORD, Texas – A Weatherford police officer called to back up a fellow officer scuffling with a man wanted on an outstanding warrant Thursday night wounded both when he fired his revolver in an attempt to subdue the criminal suspect.

The wounded officer, Chris Bumpass, and the unidentified suspect were taken to an area hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. They were reported in okay condition by the Weatherford Police Department.

The officer who fired the shots was not immediately identified. He was placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure for police involved in shootings.

Weatherford police said the accidental shooting of the officer occurred around 9:15 p.m., central time, outside the Tequilla Bar Y Grill on Tin Top Road when officer Bumpass make a routine traffic stop of a car and discovered that one of three occupants had an outstanding arrest warrant.

Police said Bumpass called for backup assistance, and when the officers tried to arrest the suspect he became “combative and began to assault” Bumpass, striking him with a flashlight.

The backup officer tried to subdue the suspect with his stun gun but that had no effect, the police said. He then fired his service revolver, accidentally striking officer Bumpass and also wounding the suspect, the police said.

Police said the suspect faces a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer. The Texas Rangers will investigate the case.

Officer Bumpass has served on the Weatherford Police Department for one year. He was awarded “Rookie of the Year” honors recently.
