Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. attends local bout
A first-of-its-kind boxing match, known as the Logan Martin Rumble, took place at the CEPA building at Pell City High School on Saturday, and featured an appearance by legendary boxer Roy Jones Jr.
The event featured around a dozen undercard fights before the main event between Michael Williams Jr. and Phillip Lars. Williams Jr. is specially promoted by Jones Jr., who was at the match.
Williams Jr. was victorious in the main event.
The event was rented out by One One Six Boxing Promotions based out of Gadsden.
Jeff Thompson, executive director for CEPA, said this is the first time a sporting event such as boxing has been featured at CEPA. He said it was an “extremely positive experience.”
“I would like to see more of this. We are in the market for that quality of an event,” Thompson said. “It was a very organized and streamlined event.”
Thompson and Brandi McCain, promotor of One One Six Boxing Promotions, both said they were pleased with the event despite Covid-19 regulations and obstacles.
“The event was a huge success, especially during Covid,” McCain said.
