Springville Council approves Library expansion
The Springville Public Library was a topic of discussion at the last Springville City Council meeting concerning an expansion of the library. This addition lays out the plans for the creation of a children’s annex. The library is planning on expanding in the former City Hall offices, which moved to the new location late last year.
The Library staff’s vision is to have separate spaces for children and adult sections, creating a more conducive space for all patrons to enjoy. Their mission is, as stated, to enrich the lives of local citizens through information, education, the arts and recreation.
The news of this expansion comes after a wildly successful time for the establishment. The library has had a year filled with unprecedented growth.
Springville librarian, Jamie Twente, has brought her 18 years of experience as a public school librarian to Springville.
She worked at Clay-Chalkville High School and Hewitt-Trussville Middle School to introduce some new programs and a new Young Adult section in the library. The new Young Adult section that concentrates on ages 13-18, had 85 books in circulation in the first month. The has library issued 20-50 new cards each month. Half of the county’s circulation in June was from the Springville Public Library with 3,096 books checked out. Twente hopes to get more people reading and interested in the programs the library offers.
The library recently received a matching Federal grant for $20,000 to be used to purchase new computers. The computers will be used in both the adult section and the planned Children’s Annex. The Library’s Summer Reading Program for children had over 100 participants this year, and both the staff and Council are optimistic about creating even more involvement with the expansion.
The Library offers Story Time every Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. for children ages six and under. Children are treated to a story, craft and snack.
There is also a “No Rules Book Club” that meets the second Friday of every month. This month’s book is A Thousand Miles to Freedom by Eunsun Kim.
The library features a community event monthly. This month the community event is artist Angela Taylor, who teaches Cherokee Leaf Print quilting. Taylor donated a quilt to be raffled with the proceeds benefiting the library.
The library’s featured artist this month is local artist, Regina Berry. Berry’s artwork will be display throughout the month.
The library’s webpage has a monthly newsletter with all of the library’s information. Visit SpringvilleAlabama.org/Library for more information.
