High speed chase ends in Etowah County drug charges

A Gadsden duo led officials from multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase Nov. 3 that resulted in the recovery of a methamphetamine lab.

Shortly after midnight, the Pell City Police Department was dispatched to aid in a high-speed chase initiated by the Southside Police Department, according to Pell City narcotics officer Richard Woods.

The Southside Police Department started pursuing a red 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Scottie Wilks, 42, of Gadsden, on Highway 77, then continued on to Interstate 20, Woods said. From there, Wilks took exit 158 to Highway 231 in Pell City. The car wrecked 6 miles north of Pell City where, after a short foot chase, both Wilks and passenger Shannon McLeod, 39, of Gadsden, were arrested.

Upon arrest, Wilks confessed to having a meth lab in the trunk. Officers found the lab, as well as drug paraphernalia and scales.

Upon arrest, Wilks and McLeod were taken into custody in Etowah County, where they face manufacturing charges, which are class A felonies.
