Duran students excel at regional science fair

Duran North students excelled at the 2012 UAB-CORD Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at the UAB Campus Recreation Center Saturday, March 3.  

Twelve winners from the school’s January Science Fair traveled to UAB and came home with eight awards.  Katie Stahlhut, Sarah Whitten, Kalei Graham, Ashante Wade, Whitney McKee, Anna Cagle, Cody Roberts, Luke Brasher, Luke Carr, Jesus Zubia, and Matthew Braden participated in the regional competition.    Students were accompanied by parents, siblings and Duran’s science teachers Mrs. Dile, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Wilson.  

Receiving special recognition for outstanding achievement were Luke Carr receiving the Navy Science award, Luke Brasher receiving the American Psychological Society award and Matthew Braden receiving the United States Metric Association award.

Qualifying for completion in the state-wide science fair, which will be held at UAH in Huntsville on April 5-7 are: Katie Stahlhut (1st Place-Physical Science), Cody Roberts (2nd Place- Physical Science), Matthew Braden (2nd Place- Engineering) and Jesus Zubia (2nd Place Mathematics and Computer Science).  Luke Carr was awarded Honorable Mention in the Energy and Transportation category.

PCHS students awarded at science fair

Pell City High School students did an exceptional job at this year’s Regional Intel Science Fair at UAB.  Fifteen winners from the PCHS fair attended this year’s regional science fair.  These students brought home a total of 7 awards.  This year’s competitors included: Larry Patterson, Amber Faulkner, Matthew McCrory, Paul Nelson, Kendall Smith, Laura Stamps, Calvin Anglin, Grant Stice, Kylie Kerr, Matthew Whittington, Matthew Sullivan, Ollie Simpkins, Taylor Wood, Alexus Gover and Allie Stephens.

Receiving special recognition for outstanding achievement were Larry Patterson receiving the Naval Science Award and the ACM Engineering Award and Amber Faulkner receiving the Women in Geoscience Award.

Qualifying for completion in the statewide science fair, which will be held at UAH in Huntsville on April 5-7 is Larry Patterson (1st Place – Engineering – Energy and Transportation).   The following received Honorable Mentions in their categories: Paul Nelson (Physical Sciences), Kendall Smith (Behavior and Social Sciences) and Matthew McCrory (Engineering).
