Girl dies in go-cart crash

Members of the Leeds community is rallying to support a Pell City family who lost their young daughter this past weekend.

A memorial fund has been established at Covenant Bank for the Goodwin family after their 7-year-old daughter, Savannah Grace Goodwin, was killed in an accident.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the Cook Springs area. She died from head trauma related to a go-kart accident. St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell pronounced Goodwin dead at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham.

While the family lives in the Pell City area, they do have relatives in Leeds. Savannah was a member of youth softball teams with the Leeds Youth Baseball and Softball program in past years and was signed up to play again this year. The board of that program is considering what they might can do to help the family, but no details have been confirmed.

Goodwin was a student at Eden Elementary School. Counselors from across the county were onhand at Eden Elementary on Monday to help her fellow students cope with the loss.

In addition to playing softball, she was also a girl scout and cheerleader.

Her parents are Amanda Laney and Lynn Goodwin. She has one brother.

To help the family, a donation can be given at the Leeds or Moody branches of Covenant Bank.

Services for the child were held Wednesday.
