Opening Reception for watercolorist Chuck Jones is Sunday in Leeds
On Sunday, May 6, the Leeds Arts Council will honor McCalla artist, Chuck Jones, with a reception to open his exhibit at the Leeds Theatre and Arts Center, 8140 Parkway Drive, downtown Leeds. The reception will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to come meet the artist and enjoy his beautiful watercolor paintings. There is no charge; however, his paintings will be available for purchase.
The artist is a native of Birmingham but spent most of his life in Atlanta. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Atlanta College of Art and has studied under John Dillon, Lee Manners and the late Bill Yeager. He has always been interested in watercolor as his medium. The artist says he was influenced by Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Howard Pyle and Andrew Wyeth and that his work is dedicated to a vanishing way of life that should reflect historical significance.
Chuck Jones is a resident artist at Tannehill State Park. The rural settings of the communities surrounding the park also have inspired the artist and are subjects of his work.
Locally, Chuck is represented by Artist Incorporated. He is a member of the Alabama Watercolor Society. His paintings are in corporate and private collections across the south.
The arts center gallery is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and during LAC events. This exhibit will run through May 31. In case of inclement weather, call ahead to see if it has been necessary to re-schedule. Reservations are now being taken for the Leeds Community Chorus Concert, “Hooray for Hollywood” which will be May 19 and 20. For more information regarding the reception, exhibit or other arts council events, call the arts center at 699-1892 or go to www.leedsartscouncil.org.
