Hello readers! I’m back with this week’s edition of What’s Up in Odenville.

Recently, the hubz and I decided to have some brush cleared to expand our front yard. My idea was to plant grass seed, a few flowers and even some shrubbery around the house. When the brush was cleared, I made a Wally World run for some gardening tools and essentials.

After about 20 minutes of getting tangled up in briars, almost losing an eye trying to pile up stray limbs, trying to dig holes only to be thwarted by mountain rock and getting a million bites from an invisible source — I have determined that I am just not cut out for yard work. Never fear because I have a back up plan.

Sandy Beaches Tanning Salon is under new ownership! Karrly Isdell has taken over for Kristin Ledbetter as of last week. Sandy Beaches is located on U.S. 411 in the strip mall next to Four Star Realty. The business also has a new Facebook page. New Arrival: The Heart of Dixie Clan has a new member. Zoey Isabella Hollis made her entrance Friday, April 8 to parents Ridge and Mary Hollis and big brothers Christopher, Caleb and William. Miss Zoey weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. Congrats, she’s a beauty!

Sports News

The St. Clair County High School 2015 Football Banquet was held at SCCHS on Sunday, April 10. All of the Senior football players and trainers were recognized. Individual awards were given to the following players:

• Super Saints Award (for dedication and always putting the team ahead of themselves): Collin Jones (who also happens to be my AWESOME nephew).

• Jeff Bishop Iron Man Award (for being the strongest player on the team pound for pound): Justice Carter.

• Team Captain Awards: Justice Carter, Mason Dixon, Taylor Mickens and Johnnie Thornton

• All County: Mason Dixon, Tristan Hawkins, Johnnie Thornton and Justice Carter

• All County Honorable Mention: Taylor Mickens, Tyler Palm, Kylie Harrell and Grayson Beatty

BASEBALL PLAYERS/PARENTS: Odenville is fielding a 15U baseball team this summer and is looking for a couple more players. If your son wants to play, he must be 14-15 years old and will not turn 16 before July 31.

We will be holding practices and some games on SCCHS’ field (Odenville). Games will be played locally. Cost is $175, which includes insurance, two jerseys, pants, hat, umpire fees, sanction fees for tournaments and some team gear including bats, balls and catchers gear.

The OMS Archery team placed 13th out of 71 teams at State Competition. Great job, team!

Odenville Bass Club’s high school fishing team is competing this weekend in the 2016 Costa Bassmaster High School Southern Open on Lake Guntersville. Find more about the event at bassmaster.com. Reel ‘em in, gang!

Skyler Mizzell competed in the NHSCA nationals in Virginia beach April 1-3. He lost 11-10 to a Pennsylvania wrestler, pinned a North Carolina wrestler and lost to Sean Caleb Allison in the consolation bracket, putting him one match shy of earning the distinction as St. Clair County’s first all-America wrestler. He hopes to return next season to try his luck again.

There were over 3,400 participants through four age groups and 14 weight classes. Very few Alabama wrestlers made All-America this season, including several state champs. The tournament is one of the largest in the country and saw competitors from Florida to Alaska.

Community News

Odenville will be have a community-wide cleanup on Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m.-noon. Volunteers are needed as well as sponsors. T-shirts will be provided for volunteers, and hotdogs will also be served. For more, contact Casie Roberson at City Hall at (205) 629-6366.

North Valley Church is hosting a yard sale Saturday, May 7 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Vendor space is available at $20 per booth, and you keep your own sales. Register at mynvc.org.

The Margaret Lions Club is hosting a Cinco de Mayo fundraiser for ‘Tips for Kids’ with DJ Ivan Correa and salsa dancing on Friday, May 6 at Mi Casita from 6-8 p.m. Celebrity waiters will be on hand to serve you! All tips and funds raised will go to the Children’s Place of St. Clair County. Margaret Lions Club meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at 7 p.m. at Margaret Elementary School Library. 

The Miracle League in Moody will host the Miracles in Motion 5k Race and 1 Mile Run/Walk/Roll Saturday, April 16 to help cover costs to replace their field as the current one is worn out. Registration for the 5K is $25 and $10 for the 1 Mile race through April 9. After that, it will be $35 for the 5K and $15 for the 1 Mile. SK Services in Lincoln is hosting a job fair Thursday, April 21 from 8 a.m.-noon at the Lincoln Senior Citizens building. Cost to set up a booth is $25. OYAA Cheerleading registration is coming up soon! Dates will be Saturday, April 23 from 1-3 p.m., Saturday, April 30 from 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, May 4 from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, May 7 from 2-5 p.m. Cost is $250. Registration will be at the OYAA field house.

The Spring in the Cove Festival will be held Saturday, April 30 at Branch Cove across from Fred’s. The event will feature lots of arts and crafts, homemade jams and jellies, kids activities, local food and more. The Greg Surles Memorial Ride is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, beginning at Pell City Police Department at 8:30 am. All monies go to the fund to give Scholarships to high school senior.
