Former boyfriend kills ex-fiancee, takes own life in rural New York town

TUPPER LAKE, N.Y. — The former fiancée of an upstate New York man was shot and killed by him before he took his own life in this Adirondack Park town early Tuesday, police said.

Police identified the murder victim as Jamie R. Martin, 34, who had been engaged to Stacey J. Ayotte, 47, at one time. But the victim’s sister said the couple split more than a year ago.

Police said Ayotte shot Martin with a high-powered rifle in the front yard of his mobile home, then turned the gun on himself. The weapon was found near Ayotte’s body.

“The deaths are consistent with a murder-suicide,” said State Police Capt. Robert LaFountain. No other details were released. Both bodies will undergo autopsies.

There was no explanation why Martin, who lived elsewhere in this small northeast New York town near the Canadian border, had been at Ayotte’s home.

The couple’s 4-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son were at Martin’s home at the time of the shootings. Authorities said they are in the care of family members.

“My beautiful, loving sister was not in a relationship with Mr. Ayotte,” Jennifer Tice, the victim’s sister, posted on the website of the Plattsburgh, New York, Press-Republican. “They haven’t been together in over a year.”

The couple worked locally at the Office for People with Development Disabilities. A co-worker went to their home, found the bodies and called 911 when Martin did not report for work.

Ayotte and Martin were Tupper Lake natives. A 2013 obituary for Ayotte’s father said the couple had been engaged to be married.

Martin’s sister changed her Facebook profile picture to a snapshot of the siblings together, prompting a flood of comments of love, condolences and support.

“She was such a beautiful woman inside and out and a wonderful mama,” posted Ashley Linz. “Prayers and love to you and your family and you know you have an entire town that’s here for you all, whatever you need.”
