Pell City Council green lights event and discusses pine trees

Pell City Council discusses city pine trees and approves summer event

At the regularly scheduled Pell City Council meeting on Monday the council approved the use of city property for Bulls on the Lake at the sports complex on July 22 and 23. The user agreement was requested by Mark Hale, proprietor of Triple H Bucking Bulls and Rodeo Company.

The company agreed to pay the city $1400 overall for the use of the property. The company has decided, due to the largest crowd in the event’s history last year, to split the event into two nights.

Bubba Edge, Pell City Parks and Recreation Director, said he’s going to work harder this year to ensure all vendors follow licensing rules and regulations.

“This year I will be more hands on with them just because of the vendors to make sure they have a cutoff date and we can make sure everyone has their licenses and approval,” said Edge.

Council member Jay Jenkins said the only issue they’ve had with the event in the past is vendors showing up with no licensure. He said it’s good Edge will be monitoring it more closely this year.

George Forman, a resident of Pell City, submitted a request to the city to assess trees on a right-of-way. Forman suggested removing the trees due to roots he claimed were growing into his property. The council agreed to look into the issue and notify Forman once a decision has been made.

Jenkins said Forman is someone who has worked for the city to keep it clean and he’s hoping the board will be able to help him however they’re capable.

In the meeting agenda it was shared that Forman has requested this before and was told the trees were healthy and there was no reason for their removal.

At the end of the work session City Manager Brian Muenger said the widening and resurfacing of Dickey Drive is 95% complete. He said the asphalt needs to finish curing before permanent striping can be installed.

The city will also improve the turn radius at Hardwick Lane intersection by paving over the shoulders.

“Already the road is in much better shape than it was before, you almost forget how hard it was to navigate it before and this is looking good,” said Muenger

Muenger also said there should be no more inconveniences and the road is at full functionality.
