Preseason Preview: Ashville Bulldogs

Blessed with an offense featuring several returning skill players who were explosive last season, Coach Steve Martin enters his fourth season leading a Bulldog program that is likely the most fun team to watch in all of St. Clair County.

Averaging more than 28 points on offense last season, Ashville will be led by the returning dual threat quarterback Landon Cornutt, who is back to wreak more havoc on opponents in 2016. Cornutt will mix things up in this read-option spread attack with senior running back Kyle King and wide receiver Hunter Huckbay, who sliced and diced defenses all throughout the 2015 campaign.

Expect to look for improvements on defense this year behind the strong leadership of senior noseguard Clay Hyatt, who will be surrounded by a solid tandem of juniors in defensive end Malek Williams and linebacker Arnold Gutierrez.

Key Game of 2016: Ashville’s move up in classification from 3A to 4A will bring a very challenging schedule that will include champion-caliber teams like Oneonta, Saks and Hokes Bluff. The Bulldogs first regional opponent is Anniston on the road in week two. This is the type of opponent that Ashville can enjoy success against. The Bulldogs can position themselves well before the more challenging games in their schedule by competing with and beating Anniston.

Players to watch

#21 Kyle King – RB

Don’t let his size fool you. Despite being 5’7” and weighing about 160 pounds, King more than makes up for it with his agility and speed. King has a real gift for bursting through gaps in the defense and firing up the afterburners to outrun linebackers and safeties. He is also very good at catching footballs and gobbling up huge chunks of yardage after the catch. King and quarterback Landon Cornutt will have defensive coaches pulling their hair out trying to figure out how to contain them.

#6 Hunter Huckbay – WR/CB

For lack of a better term, Hunter Huckbay is just plain dangerous. Huckbay returns for his senior season as a player who can break open a game at any time. Lining up out wide or in the backfield, Huckbay is a dangerous running and receiving threat, who can fly out past the edge and do some serious damage in space. Huckbay also threatens opponents with a great return game, returning as Ashville’s best kickoff returner. If that wasn’t enough, Huckbay switches sides of the ball and is one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in the county. The young man is a threat anytime he gets near a football. As said before – this kid’s dangerous.
