Police report Indiana teen killed in handgun accident

LOGANSPORT, Ind. – A popular high school track star who graduated last spring died Thursday from what police said was a gunshot to the head when a 9-millimeter handgun accidentally discharged.

Logansport Police Lt. A. J. Rozzi identified the victim as Jacob Graf, 18, a freshman at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis. The officer said Graf was in possession of the gun in the front room of his family home when it went off in the presence of a friend shortly after midnight.

No details were released about how the gun discharged, and police did not release the name of the friend.

Rozzi said the victim’s parents were asleep, but the friend awoke the couple and called 911. Graf was pronounced dead at Logansport Memorial Hospital.

“They are both such good kids,” said Rozzi. “It is such a shame.”

Graf excelled in cross country track at Logansport High School, winning the North Central Conference title in 2015 and all-conference honors three years in a row. He was a freshman member of his college cross country team.

His high school coach, Chuck LaDow, said he learned of the teen’s death from his mother at 3:30 a.m. and couldn’t believe the news. He informed Graf’s former teammates later in the day.

“It’s just an unfortunate tragedy and nobody’s fault,” said LaDow. “We lost an amazing young man in the prime of his life.”
