Moody Football opens season with senior night Friday

The 2019 season could not have ended any better for the Moody Blue Devil, winning two out of their last three games.

After the 2019 season, 22 seniors graduated leaving the team to rebuild and restructure in the offseason. Along with losing seniors, the region changed taking Mortimer Jordan, Munford, Central Clay County and Sylacauga out of the schedule. Rivalry Springville will remain on the schedule although they were moved to region 6A.

Since the change in the region, Moody, Center Point and St Clair County will join Hayden, Leeds, Corner, Alexandria and Lincoln to make up the 5A region. With COVID-19 on everyones mind, the question of if football would even take place has been a hot topic. While things will be a lot different from previous years, AHSAA is putting in precautions to make sure players, coaches and spectators are safe.

Moody sophomore AJ Wallace takes the reins as quarterback for the Blue Devils. In the backfield with AJ running the ball will be Nick Burrell, Cam Benefield, and Landon Echols. The receiving core will be solid with senior Logan Cole leading the way. Joining him will be Senior Pate Argo, Sophomore Kolby Seymore, and Freshman Blaine Burke. Blocking for the offense will be Mason Myers, Rob Safi, Logan Suggs, Caleb Griffin, and Carson Dillashaw. Myers and Suggs are the only ones remaining from last year’s offensive line that included Grayson Isebell, and Jackson Duke. The offense will look to throw the ball more this season, but utilize a solid running game as well.

Christian Sierra will handle the extra points and field goals. Junior Connor Speigel will handle the kickoffs and the punting goes to senior Landon Echols.

Second year defensive coordinator Brandon Campbell learned what it felt like to have the defense on the field to make plays to close out a game. The Blue Devils defense will be led by senior defensive end Chris Horne, junior defensive tackle Logan Suggs, senior middle linebacker Taylor Rothe, senior outside linebacker Landon Echols, and senior defensive back Pate Argo. senior Logan Cole will be helping out in the outside linebacker role too.

Moody will have senior night Friday in case the season is interrupted due to COVID-19. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
