Moody finishes out season
The Moody Blue Devils closed their 2016 football season out in grand fashion, blowing out the Plainview Bears 41 – 7. They end their season finishing 3 – 7 (1 – 6).
It was senior night for the Blue Devils last Friday night and Moody saved its best performance of the season for last. Seniors number 7 Chris Gragg, number 8 Logan Burkett, number 11 T.J. Johnson, number 15 Caleb Sciro, number 18 Kyle Ivy, number 26 Fernando Sanchez, number 29 Chase Kelly, number 36 Darrian Green, number 45 Brady Price, number 51 Hunter Winslett, number 62 Colby Bush, number 66 Garrett Paysinger, number 70 Noah Miller, and number 75 Steven Porter all took the field as captains and dawned Moody blue and white for the last time.
The Blue Devils hit the field running. Thanks to a great 42 yard punt return to the Plainview 32 yard line Moody was set up in great field position on their first drive. Five plays later, Ivy scored from 21 yards out. Fernando Sanchez’s extra point was good and Moody was up 7 – 0. Moody stopped the Bears in three plays on their next possession and the ground horse Gabe Webb later scored from three yards out to put Moody up 14 – 0 after the first quarter.
Thanks to a 62 yard run by Webb on the Blue Devils next possession, Moody was set up deep into Bear territory at their 12 yard line. Two plays later, Webb punched in his second touchdown of the night to put Moody up 21 – 0 with 10:51 left in the half.
The Bears mishandled their next punt after the Blue Devil defense stopped the Plainview offense cold once again. The Bears punter took an accidental knee at their own 17 yard line. Webb scored his third touchdown of the first half from 17 yards out. Moody was rolling along up 28 – 0 at half time.
Moody got the ball to start the second half and marched right into Plainview territory, but had to settle for a 24 yard Sanchez field goal to push their lead up to 31 – 0. Senior Logan Burkett put up the next Moody touchdown. His big 34 yard run set the Blue Devils up first and goal at the Bears one yard line. Burkett punched it in for the score on the very next play. The extra point was good and Moody was up big 38 – 0 after three quarters.
The only points for the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter came by way of a 43 yard field goal by Sanchez to put Moody up 41 – 0. The Bears put together a late touchdown scoring drive to make the final score 41 – 7.
Moody Head Coach Jay Brown got his 85th win in his career, making him the winningest coach in St. Clair County history. Moody’s season comes to an end. They will finish 3 – 7 (1 – 6). It was not the best season record wise for the Blue Devils, but they were in every game they play but two. The off-season is now under way for the Blue Devils. They will not take the field again until spring. They will open the season in 2017 at Springville.
