2016 Commissioner Candidates
The following candidate descriptions were submitted to the Moody Area Chamber of Commerce and used in the program for the organization’s candidate forum on Feb. 11.
Commissioner Jimmy Roberts
Jimmy Roberts is a native of St. Clair County and commissioner for District 4. While serving on the St. Clair County Commission he has been involved with many projects that have brought St. Clair County to the forefront in the state of Alabama. These projects include St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital, Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home, Red Diamond Coffee and Tea, WKW Automotive, and many more businesses and community projects.
He attended Pell City High School, Gadsden State Community College, and Auburn University where obtained credentialing as a county commissioner. He has been recognized by the Association of County Commission of Alabama for his work and services as county commissioner. Additionally, he has served in the United States Air Force and the Alabama National Guard. Commissioner Roberts is proud to be a member of the VFW and many more veteran groups.
He is married to Kathleen Thompson Roberts and resides in Eden, Alabama. He spends his time working outdoors in his yard, toiling over his coveted 1954 Studebaker Commander, and trying very hard to learn computer skills.
Mack Abercrombie
Mack Abercrombie spent four years on City Council of Pell City, and spent three years as Mayor of Pell City. While in office accomplished the following:
Moved the Pell City ballparks from Avondale Mills. Built new fields at the Civic Center. Got land annexed into the city limits of Pell City where Walmart, service stations, Arby’s, Wendy’s, two hotels, two restaurants and Home Depot now conduct business. Helped find land for the Pell City Post Office to relocate from Cropwell and opened the Pell City Animal Shelter.
Abercrombie worked alongside Senator Jack Biddle to tie the two industrial parks together and was instrumental in initializing the Industrial Development Board.
Commissioner Tommy Bowers
A graduate of Brantley High School in Crenshaw County, AL, Tommy served 13 years in the Alabama Army National Guard. He is retired from Alabama Power Co. after 43 years. He began with AL Power as a Laborer and progressed through the ranks to Local Manager of the Pell City and Ashville offices. Tommy has received numerous honors, including the Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year, and a Paul Harris Fellow award from the Pell City Rotary Club. He has served in various capacities on numerous boards and associations.
He is a founder, and first chairman, of the St. Clair County Economic Development Council, and received its’ first-ever Chairman’s Award, Tommy was appointed by the Governor in 2014 to serve as
Commissioner from District 3, to finish the term of Paul Manning. Tommy and his wife, Sherry, have been married 44 years and have three children – Brandon, Shane and Lisa – and six grandchildren.
Stan Batemon
Stan Batemon served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968-1971 and was a Decorated Vietnam Combat Veteran; 1978-1994 Alabama National Guard Combat Mortar Platoon Service to State.
Game Warden Supervisor Retired, 34 years, Enforcement Officer of the Year, 1988. He served as a St. Clair County Commissioner for eight years and County Commission Chairman for 16 years. He was Past President of the Alabama Association of County Commissioners and member Board of Directors for 15 years, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Counties, Chairman of the Veteran’s Services Sub-Committee, and a two-time Past President of the Pell City Chamber of Commerce and the Pell City Lion’s Club.

Graduate of Leadership Alabama and Pell City. Active Member: Church of the Highlands, Small Group Leader.
