What’s Up in Odenville: Community welcomes new additions, mourns loss of beloved resident

Hello readers! I’m back with this week’s edition of “What’s Up in Odenville”.

The “Super Bug.” That’s what the doctors and specialist are referring to the stomach virus that’s going around. Last week, I left my loyal readers high and dry without a column to read thanks to this so called “Super Bug.”

The hubz (who NEVER gets sick) went down first, and he went down hard, subsequently taking the entire household with him. I have lost 9 pounds, and while I’m rejoicing (good riddance) to losing the weight – just in time for the spring season – the manner in which it was lost can only be described as “brutal,”

If I never have that mess again it will be too soon. Alas, I am now good-as-new and ready to bring you the happenings in our little village.

Let’s get to the news:

Our town is mourning the loss of one of its own. Phillip Hudgins died tragically last Friday, March 11, in an early morning house fire. Phillip was a friend to everyone and would give the shirt of his back to help someone in need. It’s only fitting that our little town would come together and give his family the shirt off theirs.

Friends, family and local businesses have rallied together to help raise money for immediate and long-terms needs of his wife, Angela, and daughter, Summer. Joyce Dunn, Angela’s mom said, “We are so overwhelmed for all that has been done to help [us]. This is why I love our town so much. Thank you!”

There will be a service to honor his memory this Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Red Hill Baptist Church on Highway 11 in Springville. All are welcome to attend.

Proud parents Ivy and Christian Garner welcomed a perfect addition to their family! Kenneth Eden Garner, born March 9 at 11:50 p.m., weighing 5 pounds 12 ounces and 18 inches long. Welcome to the world, little one!

Scott and Kim Conaway, along with sons Justin, Barry and J.D., welcome a new addition to the family! The Conaways adopted 2-year-old Jasper James Conaway on Tuesday, March 8.

When asked how the adoption came about Kim replied, “We are a Foster family, and he was our foster child. Circumstances led to him being eligible for adoption, and we jumped at the chance to have him forever.” Congrats!

Congrats also to Graci Pennington on winning Overall Most Photogenic Award in the Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen pageant held this past weekend. Proud parents are Scottie, Dana and big brother Austin.

The 7/8 Odenville Pirates took home second place in a pre-season baseball tourney hosted by Leeds Youth Park. The Odenville Hurricanes 6U softball team also took home second place in a softball tourney held last week at OYAA . The 12U Odenville Inferno were tournament champions! Way to go gang! Great job!

JUST MARRIED: Kayla Huffman Fox and Dylan Fox said “I Do” Friday, March 4 in Gatlinburg, Tenn. The bride and groom reside in Odenville and have a 2-year-old daughter, Emma.

The SCCHS Class of 1956 will have a Class Reunion on April 16 from 1:30-4 p.m. at the high school. For more, contact Rex Riddle at riddles@knology.net

Spring Break is around the corner! St. Clair County Schools will be closed Friday, March 25 for Good Friday and March 28-April 1 for Spring Break. School will resume regular schedule Monday April 4.

This Saturday, March 19, is the deadline for “Baskets For Babies.” This program will help provide Easter baskets for children that will be placed with DHR for the holiday (not placed with the foster family).

Donations in the form of pre-made Easter baskets from a local store are requested, or donate $10 and a basket will be made. For every pre-made basket or donation, your name will go in a drawing for a $50 gift certificate from local businesses. Drop off any donations at Johnson’s Trading Post, Tablescapes and More, 411 and Main, or Sassy’s Boutique.

If you would like to make a credit card/debit donation, you can call (205) 629-0980 on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. or on Saturday from 10 a.m. through the close of the Johnson’s Trading Post live auction and someone will be glad to do that over the phone.

That’s all for this week! Email your news to OdenvilleNews@gmail.com.
