Hard luck dairy farmer loses another 100 cows in fire

ELLENSBURG, N.Y. – The misfortune of dairy farmer Derrick Glaude in this northern New York hamlet is so stunning he refuses to talk about it.

A barn fire on his Riverview Farm in Clinton County early Thursday resulted in the death of more than 100 cows in addition to the destruction of barn and another building.

More than six years ago, Glaude lost 110 heifers in a barn fire that destroyed a shed, two tractors, other assorted equipment and a mountain of hay.

Glaude wouldn’t talk about his adversity at the scene of the latest fire, except to say he was insured. New York is one of the top five milk producing states in the country.

Colin Wall, chief of the local volunteer fire department, said the fire at Glaude’s farm in Ellensburg Center broke out about 2:50 a.m. He said the blaze had engulfed the 300-foot barn and an adjacent structure when his crew arrived. He said the barns’ tin roofs inhibited efforts to extinguish the fire.

Wall said neighbors and others were present when he got there, adding they “saved 40 to 45 of the cattle.”

The fire chief said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
