Chess club growing, new league starts next Saturday
The County Knights and Country Queens chess club is beginning its current season.
The second practice of the new season will be held Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at the country Knights Chess School & Scholastic Center (13260 US Hwy 411, Odenville—next to Domino’s Pizza).
The league officially starts next Saturday.
Pedro Pino, who oversees the league, said he is slowly getting more kids signing up to play at schools across St. Clair County. Anyone interested in playing is welcome to join the club.
The club now has 11 members in Odenville, 10 in Leeds, three in Margaret, three Ashville and four in Springville.
“I’m just trying to get kids together in a league to come over to the chess center and learn to play,” Pino said. “That way, down the road when we go to tournaments they wouldn’t be awed by the number of kids and talent the might see. I’m trying to get them to play at the next level.”
The chess center is open to anyone to come over and start practicing, Pino said.
The club normally meets at the chess center and often gets out into the community, such as attending last month’s music festivals in Odenville and Leeds.
The program is free to registered After-School Program students.
They meet in four sections: K-3, K-6, K-9, K-12. Most players will play in their grade group, but players are allowed to play-up into a higher section if they want a greater challenge.
