There was a line of antique cars outside of The Ark Restaurant in Riverside last weekend, which may not be a rare occurrence in the over 60 year history of the local restaurant, known for its fried seafood and other Southern favorites. 

But regular patrons may have been surprised to see a new sign featuring, “White Cow Diner” lighting up Hwy 78 with red neon, yellow caution tape and large trucks parked outside.

The Ark got a temporary remodel as the location for a Netflix movie, “The Devil All the Time” filming in the area. 

Crews worked for two days to redecorate the interior and create a sign to transform The Ark into the “White Cow Diner.” Filming took place during the evening of Friday, March 1 and crews put everything back to their original condition on Saturday.

The Ark was closed to the public for the duration of shooting and employees had a few days off. 

“The employees are still being paid,” said Shirley Abts, owner of The Ark. “They work so hard all year. We are open seven days a week so they don’t get much time off.”

Location scouts were looking for a place to recreate the time period of the film, which takes place from the end of World War II until the 1960s. 

“[Scouts] read the script to find what they are looking for and show the director the potential locations,” said Cid Swank, publicist for the film. “The art department puts in a lot of hard work and detail into these locations.”

“The Devil All the Time” is also filming in locations in Jacksonville and Anniston during the months of March and April. It is set to release sometime in 2020.

The film is based on the novel by Donald Ray Pollock, a gothic thriller set in rural southern Ohio and West Virginia. According to IMDB (Internet Movie Database) “’The Devil All the Time’ follows a cast of compelling and bizarre characters from the end of World War II to the 1960s. There’s Willard Russell (Bill Skarsgard), tormented veteran of the carnage in the South Pacific, who can’t save his beautiful wife, Charlotte (Haley Bennett), from an agonizing death by cancer no matter how much sacrificial blood he pours on his “prayer log.”

There’s Carl (Jason Clarke) and Sandy Henderson (Riley Keough), a husband-and-wife team of serial killers, who troll America’s highways searching for suitable models to photograph and exterminate. There’s the spider-handling preacher Roy  and his crippled virtuoso-guitar-playing sidekick, Theodore, running from the law. And caught in the middle of all this is Arvin Eugene Russell (Tom Holland), Willard and Charlotte’s orphaned son, who grows up to be a good but also violent man in his own right.”

The cast features well-known actors such as Tom Holland (Spider-Man Homecoming); Sebastian Stan in the role of Lee Bodecker (Captain America: Civil War); Bill Skarsgard (IT); Robert Pattinson (Twilight); and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and is directed by Antonio Campos.

Along with a cast of extras, Sebastian Stan was filming scenes at the Ark on Friday night.

“I think this is really good for the area,” said Abts. “We’re bringing people to the area that have to eat, buy gas, stay somewhere. They do a huge amount of filming in Georgia and maybe we can open the door to more filming here.”
