Leeds wins by 78 points in last regular season game, making school history
The Leeds Green Wave close out the regular season in grand fashion, winning the Class 4A region 3 title with a 78 – 0 win over the Holtville Bulldogs last Friday night. 78 points is the largest margin of victory and the most points the Green Wave has put up in school history. Leeds has a week off before heading into the 2015 playoffs next week.
The Holtville Bulldogs probably felt like they were in the middle of a hurricane instead of a tidal wave as the Green Wave racked up a quick 30 points in the first quarter. TaDarryll Marshall connected with Koi Freeman for a 45-yard touchdown on the games’ second play. The Green Wave defense picked up two points with a safety. Chandler Teems picked up his first career high school touchdown when Marshall found him in the back of the end zone for a score. The Leeds defense got involved with the scoring when Tyler Rose picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Marshall closed out the quarter with a 55-yard scramble for a touchdown. After all was said and done, Leeds was off and running, up 30-0 after the first quarter.
Leeds kept the scoring going strong in the second quarter. Facing second down and seven, at the Bulldog 37 yard line, Marshall handed the ball off to Tre Nation and he powered through defenders and took it to the house for a score. The Morgan Coston extra point was good and Leeds led 37-0 with 11:07 left in the half. The Green Wave recovered a fumble in the Bulldogs next possession, setting them up at the Holtville 15-yard line. Three plays later, senior Tyler Rose scored from three yards out. On the Green Waves’ last possession of the first half, Leeds was on the move once again. Zac Roberts connected with Brandon Franklin for 28 yards down the sideline to the Bulldog 12-yard line. Roberts carried the ball to the one-yard line on a keeper, and senior Josephus Smith closed out the drive from one yard out. With the extra point, Leeds was up 51-0 at halftime.
Nation got on the board to start the third quarter with a 58-yard run for a score to put Leeds up 58-0. Jermain Williams later got on the board with a 36-yard run for a score to put Leeds up 64-0 after three quarters. The onslaught continued.
Williams got on the board again early in the fourth quarter this time from 20 yards out. Alante Porter closed out the scoring with a scoop and score for the Green Waves school record 78th point. Leeds shut out the Bulldogs 78-0 to win the class 4A region 3 title.
Leeds ends the regular season 8-2 (5-1) and ranked number three in class 4A behind UMS Wright and Cordova. Leeds scored the most point in a game and got the largest margin of victory in school history. Both record held in place since 1929, a 70-0 win over Alliance, until last Friday night.
Tre Nation had 123 yards on five carries and two touchdowns. Marshall had a touchdown pass to Koi Freeman and Chandler Teems. He also ran for a touchdown. Tyler Rose scored two touchdowns, as did Jermain Williams. Josephus Smith, Gyderious Rogers and Alante Porter all scored touchdowns
Leeds has a bye this week to get ready for the start of the second season and a home playoff game in the first round.
