Springville Senior Center
The Springville Senior Center is a bustling place with lots to offer.
The Senior Center has seen a recent increase in membership, which is free to those over 52 years of age and older residing in St Clair County. The center is a multi-use facility with programs, classes, outings, daily meals and so much more. Director, former home health employee and former SCAT employee, Carrie Denton, is passionate about the seniors. She and her team have big plans for the center.
Sherry M. Bryan, the assistant director has filled the calendar with plans for new programs and events in 2017. The center recently hired Teresa Vaughn as director of arts. Vaughn, a Springville native, has worked as a missionary to the Navajo Indians and is a certified by Duncan’s IADTCC to teach ceramics.
Meals at the center are administered by the Alabama Department of Senior Services every weekday for a $2 donation under the M4A state program for seniors 60 and older. Seniors may take advantage of the St Clair Area Transportation (SCAT) at no charge to and from the Senior Center. The center also offers a host of programs for health. They offer State administered vouchers for area farmers markets through the State’s Senior Farmers Market Program. The center also offers free health classes and prescription discounts through Alacare Home Health Services. The Southern Company offers programs for seniors who need help paying their power bill. Odenville Drugstore offers free flu shots, holiday meals and prescription discount programs through the Senior Center.
One of the most popular departments at the Senior Center is the art department. The art room has a kiln for firing ceramics. The art department has classes on a variety of arts. They offer classes in ceramics, painting, crochet, pinewood derby cars and bird house crafting. The center is planning a “Art in the Park” event for this year.
Some of the other classes offered range from Emergency Preparedness, Grief Counseling, Disability Rights and Exercise Classes taught by certified Arthritis Foundation instructors. The activities are as diverse as the members.
No center is complete without entertainment. Visitors are offered a rotating game schedule of Scrabble, Uno and other card and board games. They also use the Wii for bowling.
A planned event this year for the center is an outing to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The Senior Center is also planning a county wide event at Big Springs Park in May 2017 involving other Senior Centers from around the county. The event will feature live music and entertainment. The Springville Fire Department will provide barbeque.
The senior center was represented in Springville’s Christmas in the Country Christmas Parade with a float named, “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.”
