Springville’s Logan earns FCA scholarship

Joshua Logan, a 2010 graduate of Springville High School, has received the Coach Bill Hawkins Scholarship from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) of North Central Alabama.

The $500 award was presented during the annual Alabama Sports Hall of Fame-FCA Breakfast last Saturday.  Logan was one of three scholarship recipients and shared the student testimony during the program.

The scholarship selection process begins with two nominees from each high school having a certified FCA chapter, said director Jack Baker.  FCA board members then interview the students and their FCA faculty sponsors, and recipients are selected based on character, leadership, and FCA involvement.

Logan, the son of Barry and Ashley Logan, was one of 33 nominees from 22 schools in nine counties.  Hope Rayburn was Springville High’s other nominee for the Hawkins Scholarship, named for the 81-year-old retired coach and longtime FCA board member.

The award will supplement the four-year Faculty Scholars Scholarship Logan has received from Jacksonville State University.  He graduated from Springville with a 3.3 GPA and advanced academic diploma while participating in dual enrollment through Jefferson State Community College.  Since 2006, he has also operated his own lawn care service.

Logan was named captain of the Tigers’ football and baseball teams and awarded the Austin Phillips Character and Leadership Award for football.  Phillips is a Springville alumnus who graduated this year from Auburn University.

Logan has been named to the Who’s Who Registry of Academic Excellence and the National Honor Roll and was a 2007 recipient of the Lead America Scholarship Award.  He has volunteered with many missions activities with the First Baptist Church of Springville and the St. Clair County Sav-A-Life program and worked with Springville Middle School students as a math tutor and mentor.
