Parker, Joe win Big Springs 5K

With their running shoes laced up, positioned in their “ready, set, go” stance, approximately 300 runners started the third annual Big Springs 5k at the sound of the shotgun start.

Amy Martin and Natalie Hinds are responsible for creating the Big Springs 5k. For the past three years proceeds from the run have gone towards the Springville playground equipment fund as well as the Springville fire and police departments.

Deciding to play a different role in next year’s Big Springs 5k, both ladies will become participants instead of planners. The Springville Library Foundation will take over the run’s reigns.

Completing the run just under 17 minutes, at approximately 16:58, Justin Parker won fastest overall male winner for the second year in a row, even beating his previous record. Coming in as the fastest overall female Mary Joe finished at 19:02.

Before moving on to the awards ceremony a one mile family fun run took place.

Children participating in the one mile fun run, received ribbons while winners throughout various age ranges won medals for winning their age specific races.

For their achievements of being the fastest overall male and female runners, Parker and Joe were rewarded with $200 a piece in cash prizes.

Taking time to acknowledge the hard work of Martin and Hinds Springville Mayor William Isley presented them with keys to the city as well as a plaque for their dedication to the community. Another surprise Isley declared the red pavilion at Big Springs Park as the Martin Hinds Pavilion.

Tearing up both women were also presented with a bouquet of red roses as they graciously said thank you to the mayor.

“The ladies have played a big part in making the Big Springs 5k a great success,” said Isley. “Their uncommon dedication and enthusiasm have contributed to the quality of life here in Springville.”

Honored to have a great sense of community pride seen throughout Big Springs Park, Isley thanked everyone for their support.

“This used to be nothing more than a walking track and a lake. Big Springs Park is an emerald for this city,” said Isley. “We have plans to extend the walking track. This park is going to be fantastic and we’re so proud of it.”

Looking forward to next year’s Big Springs 5k Isley says only good things are to come.

“The Big Springs 5k continues to be a tremendous success. We look forward to raising money next year to benefit the Springville Library Foundation.”
