Helping find a cure

The Keller Williams Relay Realtors have joined together in the search for a cure through Relay for Life. There are over 17 members on the team who have in one way or another been affected by cancer. This is the group’s first year to participate in Relay for Life as a team and they are relaying in honor of their friend and fellow realtor Jody Sims. Sims recently found out she has breast cancer and just started chemotherapy and radiation over the past several weeks.

Tanya Ward, a survivor and realtor with Keller Williams, said the Relay Realtors are like one big, huge family. “Anyone battling cancer needs a core group of people for support,” she said. “We want to help Jody keep her energy up and her spirits uplifted. It is a very scary time when you find out you have cancer. Your mind wonders. With us, some being survivors, it helps to give support in order to give her hope and to remind her to never give up.”

Ward has been involved with Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society for a couple of years. She is a survivor of cervical cancer. Ward said cancer has always been a part of her life. Her sister had thyroid cancer and her mom lost her battle with brain cancer.

“I want to do all I can to raise money to help find a cure,” she said. “At least something. They find cures for other diseases and I know there is one out there for this.”

When the Keller Williams family found out Sims had cancer they were devastated. A lot of the group think of her as a great friend and comedian. They say she strong, outgoing, outspoken and just great all-around. Ward said she thinks of her like a mom.

“This year when Jody brought us the news and Relay for Life was right around the corner, I knew it was something we had to do,” Ward said.

So far the Relay Realtors have raised approximately $800 dollars for Relay for Life. Their goal is $1,500. Not only do they raise money in the office, but when a realtor sells a home they can take a portion of their commission and put it towards Relay for Life.

The team will also be on hand at the Moody Youth Park for opening day. The opening ceremony will take place on April 9 starting at 7 p.m. and games begin on April 10 at 9 a.m.

Ward also has a friend who makes candles. When a candle is sold a portion of sale goes directly to Relay for Life.

“We also accept donations,” she said.

Survivors like those at Keller Williams Realty are the reason for Relay for Life. The goal of the team is support each other, Sims and the many others battling the disease.
