Red Cross offering wilderness first aid class at Horse Pens 40

A wilderness and remote first aid class is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 21 and 22 at Horse Pens 40 in Steele.  The class is sponsored by the Blount/St. Clair Community Chapter of the Red Cross.

The 16-hour course provides valid three-year certification and also serves as basic first aid certification.  A minimum age of 15 is recommended.  The cost is $75, plus a $5 per day park fee.  Camping is available for $10 per person per night.

The class will cover such information as how to deal with bleeding, burns, sudden illness, fractures, head and spinal injuries, major bites and stings, techniques for protecting injury victims form harsh weather conditions, and how to contact help in an outdoor setting where 911 is not available.
