Pell City recreation hall gets new name
Honored for his dedication to the City of Pell City, Ernest White was recognized for a life of service with a proclamation presented to his family at Monday morning’s city council meeting, declaring March 11, 2013 Ernest White Day.
“He was a friend to the people of Pell City and did so much for this community,” Mayor Joe Funderburg said of White.
Among some of his noted accomplishments, White was an active member of First Baptist Church Pell City and a charter member of Leadership Pell City, and was generous with his time and talents.
“He did a lot of things in this community a lot of people did not even know about,” Council President James McGowan said.
White passed away Nov. 1, 2012. To honor his memory, the city renamed the Glen City Recreation Hall the Ernest White Community Center.
At the meeting, the council took action on the following items:
—Approved a $1.77 million contract with McCartney Construction for the city’s paving improvements project. The contract extends over a period of three years, and the city is not obligated to spend the entire amount.
—Approved an emergency repair to the roof of Fire Station IV in the amount of $5,700 due to leaks. The bid for the work was awarded to Trussville Construction.
—Approved awarding a bid to Stone & Sons for installation of lighting at Eden exit 156 in the amount of $21,606.
—Approved awarding a bid for a rubber tire excavator for the street department to Warrior Tractor in the amount of $2,248.79 for a 36-month lease.
—Approved an appropriation in the amount of $600 per month to the Christian Love Pantry.
—Approved soliciting bids for utility vehicles for the city’s parks and recreation department.
—Approved moving forward the plan to establish the fee structure for the city’s parks and recreation youth sports.
—Appointed Councilman Terry Templin to serve as the liaison between the City of Pell City and the Chamber of Commerce.
—Approved the request of Melissa and Dennis Mark Brooks for a restaurant retail liquor license (on premises only) for The Garry House Café.
