A cleaner Logan Martin Lake
A dedicated core of volunteers spent their Saturday morning tidying up the scenery at Logan Martin Lake during the annual Logan Martin Lake Protection Agency’s lake clean-up event Saturday. Throughout the day, volunteers cleared trash from the shores of the lake in preparation for the summer.
“We estimated between 500 and 600 people came out for the clean-up, and we don’t have our total numbers on tonnage, but we’re estimating somewhere over six tons of trash was taken out of the lake,” said Bud Kitchin, chairman of the Logan Martin Lake Protection Agency.
While the amount of trash taken from the lake was less than last year, it wasn’t entirely a surprise.
“We knew early on that the trash numbers would be down, because of prior year successes in taking trash out, and because flooding conditions two weeks prior to the cleanup pushed a lot of the trash into people’s yards and off the shore line. It also took a lot of trash down river,” he said.
There was also more trash than usual on the south side of the lake, while the north side was cleaner than normal.
While many scout troops showed up Saturday to help, a great increase across the board was from walk-up volunteers.
“They just came rolling in on Saturday and say, ‘Hey, we want to pitch in and do something. Where can you send us?’” Kitchin said.
