Chamber tax credits, census
With tax season in full swing, the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce presented a pair of local professionals during its last luncheon to help businesses be prepared.
David Bowers, with Bowers and Associates, provided information about some of the changes that businesses and individuals needed to be aware of as they prepare their upcoming taxes.
Among those he highlighted was the Homebuyer Credit, a credit provided by the federal government as an economic stimulus for the real estate industry. Bowers said first-time homebuyers, including those who have not owned a home in three years, are eligible for an $8,000 tax credit.
He added that long-time homeowners are also eligible for a $6,500 credit for those who purchase a home and have lived in their current residence at lesat five years.
Mike Woodall, with M&M Tax Service, spoke about his experience as a former IRS tax auditor. He provided information about what not to do when being audited.
“The time to prepare for an audit is when you are working on your return,” Woodall said. “Speak frankly with your tax preparer throughout the process so you are prepared.”
Also speaking at the event was Mason Macon with the 2010 Census. He said it is important for the community to work hard to ensure every resident is counted.
“The federal government will distribute $400 billion. It is distributed according to population, so it is vital that your community’s census count is accurate,” Macon said.
He added that this year’s census is easier to fill out, having only 10 questions to answer and that the information gathered is considered confidential.
Chamber board president Hayes Parnell also added that the census could help Leeds with vital costs.
“There are a lot of things our schools and community needs. Please help by participating in the census this year,” Parnell said.
