Burned Body Found in Prescott

A positive identification of a body found last Friday morning in a wooded area near Prescott should come sometime today.

St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell said yesterday that dental records from the charred remains were sent to Huntsville on Tuesday and that a positive ID should be available by day’s end.

The body was transferred to Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville for autopsy Tuesday along with the dental records.

While it was initially reported that the sex of the deceased wasn’t available, Russell did say that his office suspects that the person is most likely male.

“We think it is; but as far as looking and determining it, we won’t know for certain until we hear back from Huntsville. But our lead is that it is a male,” Russell said.

The body was found around 10:30 a.m. in the trunk of a Dodge Charger—which was severely damaged by fire—near the row of large power lines on Camp Winnataska Road near Prescott nearly last Friday.

The car was seen in that location two Saturdays ago, but was not reported at that time, according to Sheriff Terry Surles. Another person noticed the vehicle and alerted authorities a few days later.

As of yesterday, authorities were not sure how long the car had been there.

While Russell has said that it is believed that the case involved homicide, authorities will not know for certain until after the autopsy results come back.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department is handling the case.

Anyone with information is urged to call the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department at 884-6840.
