Two people have been arrested with felony murder in the death of Rebekah Poe, 46, of Pell City, who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in 2022.

At a Thursday, Feb. 15 news conference, officials announced that Shawna Alyssa Masten, 31, and Christopher Cody Masters, 30, had been taken into custody in Colorado on murder warrants.

“I know it’s been a very difficult time for Scotty, Noel and Heidi, and our prayers are still with that family as we start that next chapter of this for them and hope to provide ultimate justice and closure for them,” said Pell City Police Chief Clay Morris.

On Nov. 20, 2022, a vehicle struck and killed Poe when she and her husband were confronting a car break-in near their home on Skyline Trail.

Masters and Masten were discovered in the Denver, Colo., area. Arrests warrants for felony murder were obtained on Feb. 11.

Pell City investigators coordinated with the United States Marshals Service, Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the USMS Colorado Violent Offender Task Force, the Lakewood Colorado PD and the Wheat Ridge Colorado PD in an attempt to locate and arrest the couple.

Morris said both suspects have an extensive criminal history.

“He (Masters) has been previously arrested on multiple counts of unauthorized breaking and entering of vehicles, theft, burglary, failure to appear, domestic violence, drug charges, fraud, receiving stolen property, moral decency, probation violations and contempt to court and less than 5 months after getting out of department of corrections, he kills Rebekah Poe,” said Morris.

“She (Masten) has been previously arrested for multiple counts of fraud, various drug charges, receiving stolen property, shoplifting, theft, failure to appear and probation violations,” said Morris.

Masters and Masten have waived extradition to Alabama, but face charges in Colorado.

“There is no one in this city that is more responsible for the safety of our community, allowing Pell City to be a place where people can come visit, work and play and also live here, than me. It’s ultimately my responsibility and I take that responsibility very seriously. I think our officers will tell you that. We are here to provide a safe and secure community and we are here to arrest criminals and make sure they understand their criminal activity in our city is not tolerated and I think today is a good example of that,” said Morris.

Poe is survived by her husband, two daughters, a sister, two brothers and her parents.
