More than 20,000 volunteers across North America are participating in Honda’s third annual Week of Service, in which Honda associates, dealers and suppliers conduct volunteer service activities in communities across North America.

Unipres Alabama, Inc. and their associates are committed to making a positive impact in the places where they live and work.

Steele Junior High School was the recipient of volunteer hours from Unipres Alabama, Inc which is located in Steele.  Vice presidents Yutaka Mizuro and Scott Shannon, and General Affairs Department Manager Mutsuko Garrard were joined by a dozen associates and family members on Saturday, June 16 in a painting party at the school.

Rollers and brushes were in the capable hands of Chad Overby and daughter Dezirae, Gail Whisenant, Nick Reed and daughter Cheyenne, Menica Pledger, Pam Pollard, Julie Clark and the Glass family – Barbie, Terry and Larken.  The paint was supplied by the school with Unipres Alabama, Inc. providing all the necessary rollers, brushes, trays and t-shirts.

The Junior High School will be bright and shiny for students attending Steele this fall. Principal Kelley Peoples has additional plans for cleaning up the school this summer.

“I showed a need, asked for help and people have been more than willing to help,” Peoples said. “We want to give the school a nice, clean look.”

Plans include an upgrade to the school, including new paint, new windows, new technology and new furniture to give classrooms a more consistent look. Local businesses donated money, which will be used to purchase new books for the library, which is receiving new carpet, paint, and computers as well.

“Rachel Fowler, Child Nutrient Program Director has been instrumental in upgrading the lunchroom,” Peoples said, “and Joe Goble, County Facilities Director has been working to secure improvements. It is a team effort.”

Steele Jr. High School is also starting a new Pre-K and after school program in the fall and will be focusing fundraising for new playground equipment.
