Duran Junior High School’s (DJHS) track and field team traveled to Birmingham for the Corner Middle School track and field meet on April 13 at Corner High School.

“This was our last track meet of the year—and the best season we’ve had so far,” said Ashley Fomby, track coach at DJHS.

Seven DJHS students had overall top 10 finishes at the meet.

Eighth grader Rebekah Hooks received first in girls javelin with 89 feet five inches, fourth in girls discus, and fifth in girls shot put. Hooks is currently ranked first in the entire state of Alabama for middle school girls javelin.

Emma Munkus, also in eighth grade, placed third overall in girls long jump with 13 feet six inches, as well as sixth overall in the girls 100-meter hurdles.

Finishing out the eighth grade, Brilliance Swift won sixth overall in the boys javelin with 32 feet nine inches, Jayden Harder placed eighth in the boys 110-meter hurtles with 20.05 seconds, and Keyvontey Richardson received ninth in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of one minute 2.31 seconds.

In the seventh grade, Ja’Nai Wilson won sixth in girls javelin with 45 feet 10 inches and Saylor Richard placed ninth in girls long jump with 11 feet 10 inches.

“The kids have improved so much!” Fomby said.
