The St. Clair Historical Society hosts its countywide, fourth grade history fair annually. Students from school throughout the county get a chance to create a model of a history structure in the county. They also learn about the history behind it and write an explanation of their subject.

“This teacher students to appreciate those that came before them,” Pell City School Superintendent Michael Barber said. “Anytime you expose kids to the past, it gives them a greater appreciation for their heritage.”

One of the benefits that Historical Society’s Carol Waid most appreciates is how the history fair bridges a generation gap.

“Students will often talk to their grandparents or elder relatives about the area,” Waid said. “It’s great for the older generation to share their knowledge and for the younger ones to learn from them.”

The winning students were awarded a ribbon and cash prize for their accomplishments. Each students was selected from their school, which chose one winner to send to the countywide competition.
