Basketball season takes court in Moody

The Moody Blue Devils and the Leeds Green Wave renewed their Over The Bridge rivalry on the hard wood floor of Moody High School last Tuesday night. A loss by the Moody B-Team prevented the Blue Devils from getting a clean sweep in all three games.
Picking up the action in the second quarter of the girls game, Moody held a slim 13 – 12 lead. Moody outscored the Lady Green Wave 11 – 6 the rest of the quarter to lead 24 – 18 at halftime.
The pace picked up a lot more in the third, in a quarter full of runs, Moody pushed its lead out to 10 points 38 – 28 over the Lady Green Wave. Each team scored 6 points each the rest of the quarter with the Lady Blue Devils still in control by ten points 44 – 34 after three quarters.
The Lady Blue Devil lead made it up the 14 points early in the fourth, but the Lady Green Wave went on a mid-quarter push to cut the 14 point deficit to just 7 with 2:52 left in the ball game.
After struggling from the freethrow line throughout most of the game, the Lady Blue Devils hit the ones they needed down the stretch and won by 9 point 57 – 48.
Diamond Mostella had 28 points and Kayla Ellis poured in 20 points to lead the Lady Blue Devils.
In the varsity boys game it was a fast and slow paced kind of night. The first points of the season go to Cyric Williams with a driving layup to the basket. He later hit the first three point shot of the season to give Moody a 12 – 7 lead after the first quarter.
Talan Files scored the first five points of the second quarter to push Moody’s lead out to 17 – 9. Moody was ahead 19 – 11 when Leeds went on a quick 7 – 0 run to cut the Blue Devil lead to 19 – 18. Leeds later took the lead 24, but Files his a huge three pointer to push Moody lead back up to four points. Moody held on to a 26 – 24 lead at halftime.
Leeds retook the lead with a steal and layup. Moody followed with an 11 – 3 run to open their lead back up to 6 points 37 – 31. I what was a high scoring quarter Moody led 41- 37 after 3 quarters
A Williams 3 point shot and a Carson Buckner layup put Moody up 44 – 37 forcing an early Leeds time out.
Later on in the fourth Talan Files personal 5 – 0 run (a three pointer and a layup) helped balloon the lead out to 15 points 59 – 44 with three minutes left. Moody blew the game open the rest of the way and went on to defeat rival Leeds 64 – 48.
Cyric Williams led the Blue Devil scoring with 22 points and Talan Files followed with 17 points.
