Our view: Tribute to winter warriors

It is part of our collective DNA to grouse about government and its services whenever we see inefficiency or incompetence in its work. For the most part, that’s a good thing. Taxpayers deserve positive results and accountability for their substantial investment.
In fairness, however, shouldn’t we also be willing to acknowledge good service when we get it, especially when it’s delivered during abnormal or difficult circumstances?
We think so. And local highway crews, first responders and law enforcement officials should be at the top of the list for acknowledgement this month for the service they delivered during recent hazardous weather conditions throughout state, St. Clair County and elsewhere.
Recent mild winters have spared our area much in the way of harsh winter conditions or prolonged extreme temperatures. So those trained and equipped to provide essential service during weather events haven’t had a lot of practice. We still expect them to be ready when called upon and to fulfill their obligations despite the rigors of circumstance.
Weather punched hard the past week, and our winter warriors sprung into action. The polar vortex from the northwest swept through with multiple inches of snow, layers of ice, blustery wind and extreme cold. And it was met by relentless resistance by public employees determined to manage crisis points wherever they emerged and clear the way for quick resumption of routine services.
There has been a trend in society to excessively criticize government agencies and public institutions that provide a spectrum of services that help keep our communities safe, functioning, vibrant and thriving. Such constant harping leads to a growth in cynicism toward the ability of government to meet people’s needs.
The performance of public sector workers so far this winter should quiet some of those whiny voices. Their service in most instances met, or even exceeded, community expectations.
Winter is far from over, and there may be more storms to come. But it’s only fair to take a moment to commend government workers and let them know we appreciate their efforts and acknowledge their skill and determination to plow through.
