Head Coach: Lee Gibson
At the start of his third season Coach Lee Gibson is looking to go in and continue to build on the traditions that has been Green Wave football over the past 15 years.
“We are looking to make a run into the playoffs,” Gibson stated. “We will do the best we can once we make the playoffs. We know we are in a tough region – we know we have our work cut out for us.”
A pleasant surprise for Gibson this offseason has been the players’ exceedingly positive effort and attitude. “You know … this group of kids, and I have been around for 21 years coaching football, this is honestly the best group of kids I have ever been around. It has been all about ‘What can I do to get better? What can I do to get my teammates to get better?’ The result has been the best off-season in a long while.”
Green Wave fans should expect a young group of guys with a lot of hustle in 2018. “We have only six seniors on this team,” Gibson admitted. “We’ve got a lot of freshmen and a lot of sophomores.” With this many young players, expect a lot of rotation and playing time as the Leeds’ coaching staff settles on starters.
One starter lining up behind quarterback Nick Armstrong who has cemented his position is junior running back Jakobi Hunter, a player who has already proven to be a reliable, big play back who can run out of the I and handle himself between the tackles. Defensively the Green Wave will look to two seniors for leadership in directing the defense – linebackers Alphoncie Hopson and Davonte Green.
“A lot of effort from our young guys has really got me happy this year. It’s good to watch them develop and how good they really are.” – Alphoncie Hopson – LB/WR Leeds High School |
“(The Green Wave culture) just gives us a power; it allows us to have fun, dominate, eliminate everything we face on the field and put everything we have into it.” – Omari Scott – WR/S Leeds High School |
“My O-Line is great – I couldn’t ask for a better line. Maliek Evans is the leader of that line, and I love having him there.” – Nick Armstrong – QB Leeds High School |
“In the weight room, we are getting after it – hitting heavier weights and higher reps. In conditioning we have shown a lot of discipline.” – Maliek Evans – LT/DE Leeds High School |
