Critical and creative thinking as well as problem solving and crafting just the right landing pad were all factored in for this year’s Leeds Elementary School Pumpkin Drop.
Third and fourth grade students submitted design proposals, and 15 of the top designs were chosen to see which landing pads provided the least destructive impact for these prize pumpkins.
The crowd cheered as several pumpkins survived their two story plunge.
Pumpkin Drop packets were entered anonymously with rules to ensure maximum learning and fun were had by all through this experience.
Requirements included the pumpkins had to be at least the size of a soccer ball, while the landing pads needed to be 6 feet by 6 feet to allow students to carry their work themselves without the help of an adult.
A maximum spending allowance of $5 was implemented when purchasing supplies and no mattresses or pillows were authorized landing pad options.
Intending to ignite an innovative spark, LES teachers were impressed with the submissions they received.
Now if only the innards of those pumpkins could’ve been saved for Thanksgiving Day pumpkin pie.
Fulfilling their goal of “promoting achievement, respect and success,” Leeds Elementary School continues to be at the forefront of imaginative learning.
