TRUSSVILLE, AL – For nearly two decades, the Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club has upheld a proud tradition of honoring veterans by decorating Trussville City Hall with patriotic ribbons each Veterans Day. This project, initiated by Rotarian Linda Burns in 2005, began with yellow ribbons to show support for soldiers and has evolved to include red, white, and blue ribbons, symbolizing the nation’s gratitude and respect for those who have served.

The Trussville Rotary Club partners each year with the Trussville Fire Department to bring this display to life, adorning City Hall with ribbons as a heartfelt tribute to veterans in the community and beyond. Linda, inspired by a similar tradition in Lake Jackson, Texas, saw this project as a way to say “thank you” to service members, a mission that resonates deeply with her since her son, Justen, served 20 years in the Army.

“Our military and their families sacrifice so much for our country,” Linda said. “The least we can do is recognize them and say, ‘Thank you for your service.’”

The Rotary International motto is “Service above Self,” and this club lives out this motto by serving the community in many ways. Proceeds from fundraising events, including the coordination of a golf tournament for over 30 years, go toward the club’s many projects. Those projects include leadership opportunities for local high school students, lunch for campers and staff at Smile-a-Mile, trees planted at Civitan Park, and more. The Club funded the clock tower in downtown Trussville, benches at the walking track at Cahaba Elementary, and playground equipment at The Mall in historic Trussville. The Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club meets at First Baptist Church Trussville on Wednesday at 7 a.m.
