A memorial for former Pell City Police Chief Homer Cecil “Bo Jack” Layton Jr., is planned for Saturday, July 15 at First Baptist Church of Pell City. Visitation will begin at noon with a service at 2 p.m. Graveside service will be at Seddon Cemetery.

He died June 16 in St. Augustine, Fla.

Bo Jack spent his career as a respected law enforcement officer, joining the Pell City Police Department in 1965. He was promoted to chief in 1980, serving in that capacity until 1992 when he became director of Public Safety. He retired from that post in 2000.

Bo Jack was a friend to all who knew him, quick with a smile and making those around him always feel at ease. He was a familiar face around Pell City, known for his signature, one finger wave to all he passed as he patrolled the city.

The nickname, Bo Jack, came early and stuck with him throughout his life, so named by his grandfather. And it was a name familiar to most citizens during his tenure as police chief because he always made himself available to all who needed him.
