Meet your neighbor: Madeline Shaw

Talk with Madeline Shaw for any length of time, and it’s not difficult to see why the Springville High School sophomore was named Miss Tiger Pride.
“I’m proud to say I am a Springville Tiger,” she said. “That was my opening statement in the pageant. I feel like you need to have pride in your school. If you don’t, what’s the point? I want people to want to go to Springville.”
The daughter of Emily Shaw and John Shaw, Madeline went on to explain more about why school spirit is important to her and what she has enjoyed about serving as Miss Tiger Pride since being awarded the title last year.
As Miss Tiger Pride: Among other endeavors, Shaw took part in the coin toss before last season’s homecoming football game, participated in the homecoming parade, crowned Springville’s metro league homecoming queen. “It’s been so much fun, the best thing ever.” She holds the title until the new Miss Tiger Pride is crowned Sept. 8.
School spirit: “I am really, really big on school spirit. As good as it’s been, I want to see it brought up even more. And it doesn’t take a lot of effort. It’s as easy and simple as being nice to people, saying ‘Go Tigers!’ when you see someone, wishing them a good day, and setting a good example for schools who are visiting us. At football games, they more school spirit we show the harder the boys play.”
At Springville: She is a cheerleader and member of the Key Club and student council.
Her favorite subject: “History. I like learning about what happened in the past.”
Her career goal: “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but the more I think about it, the more I’ve realized I want to be a special needs teacher. Inside, I feel like that’s what I really, really need to do.”
How she describes herself: “Kind-hearted. Friendly. I can be crazy when I’m around my friends, but I’m always going to be myself, like it or not. What you see is what you get. I don’t like drama.”
Her biggest pet peeve: “When people are mean to other people. You should treat people the way you want to be treated.”
The biggest challenge facing young people today: “Negative influences. People are influenced to do the worst things today, like drinking and hanging out with the wrong crowd. It might not affect them badly immediately, but it will in the long run.”
