Valerie and Russell Tyler have started a travel softball team for girls who cannot play school or community sports. At the time of this publication, there are a few spots left.

They are called the Pink Socks. This is a group for girls ages 14 and under. For more information, call the Tylers at 205-725-0058.

There are obvious advantages for girls who play sports: health, learning the value of teamwork and character building. According to studies by Penn State University and the Women’s Sports Foundation, there are so much more. Sports allows for the opportunity to make friends. Studies show they do not spend as much time on social media thereby avoiding the anxiety that accompanies it.

Statistically speaking, girls who play sports are more likely to have a positive body image, to make good grades, higher self-esteem, less likely to do drugs, face unwanted pregnancies, drop out of school or experience depression.

Sports teaches kids healthy competition. Those handshakes and high fives instill good sportsmanship. A quality and trait that will serve them the rest of their lives. Particularly in the workplace. Of all the female employees who work for a fortune 500 companies, 80% played sports in their youth.

Too much cannot be said about sports for youth. However, it must be said that not all of us can play. But theater, the future Farmers of America and scholars bowl all teach the same lessons.

Ashville offers all of these opportunities as well. And they have dedicated teachers, coaches and parents to support them. That’s why they have such great kids.

Have a great week.
