- On Wednesday, April 15, Gov. Robert Bentley signed a bill into law that will allow St. Clair County residents to vote on Sunday alcohol sales in their communities.
This week, Leeds Mayor David Miller informed licensed alcohol distributors within both the City and St. Clair County boundaries that they are free to start Sunday alcohol sales under the same terms and restrictions as the City’s Jefferson County merchants.
According a bill Sponsored by Senators Jim McClendon and Phil Williams during the 2015 session, licensed Leeds retailers have been able to sell alcohol on Sunday since the bill was signed into law in May. Jefferson County regulations state that alcohol cannot be sold between the hours of 2 a.m.-noon on Sundays, and those regulations now apply to St. Clair County businesses.
This portion of the law applies only to Leeds. Other St. Clair municipalities are required to hold referendums on the issue to determine if seven-day sales are appropriate for their communities. Pell City, Moody and Riverside are scheduled to open their polls on August 11.
“This is a real step forward for Leeds, and we thank Senators McClendon and Williams for recognizing Leeds’ unique problem and resolving it by legislation rather than Leeds being forced to hold an expensive referendum on the matter,” Miller said in a statement. “Leeds is unique in that we are the only city in the state located in three counties. This new legislation resolves the inequity for our citizens located in St. Clair County and places our St. Clair merchants on the same competitive footing as their Jefferson County counterparts.”
