Members of the Pell City drama department perform a number from the show.

After Mayor Bill Hereford asked for a command performance of Pell City High School’s “Crazy For You,” the theater department performed the play one last time on Tuesday night. Jeremy Gossett, director and production designer, said Hereford was so overwhelmed by the talent that he wanted others to see the play.

“I expect nothing but the best from the students,” said Gossett, who has a background in Broadway. “We keep raising the bar, and the students somehow meet the goal.”

This musical comedy had about 35 students who had been rehearsing since January. The play included modern adaptations of 1930s songs, tap dancing and jokes that kept the crowd laughing. Gossett’s sister, Kimberly Gossett Myers, helped with the choreography.

“I want the audience to be amazed with the talent we have here in Pell City,” he said.

Songs like “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Slap That Bass” and “Shall We Dance?” helped tell the story of a banker who wanted to be on stage, a mistaken identity and a love story.

“It has a modern speed and humor based around older music,” Gossett said.
