“You need to be involved in the community,” said Farrah Seals Award recipient Abbey Medlin.

Abbey Medlin has an impressive record of community service that includes Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots, and Operation Christmas Child.

The Springville High School senior doesn’t hesitate when asked why she works with the causes.

“You need to be involved in the community.  You get to know people and you can help them when they need help.  The more people you know, the more you can help.”

Her view of service helped her qualify for this year’s Farrah Seals Attitude Award, presented to Medlin during the county cheerleading competition earlier this month.  She was also named to the all-county varsity squad.

Before starting her school day Tuesday morning, Medlin discussed the award, school spirit, and her post-graduation plans.

The Farrah Seals Award:  It’s presented annually to a senior cheerleader, based on good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, GPA, extracurricular activities, and community service.

Her thoughts about receiving the award:  “Oh, goodness, it means a lot.  My sister won something similar in high school, and I’ve seen this award given to a lot of different people here, so it made me very happy to get it this year.”

About cheerleading:  “It can be very challenging.  It takes so much time, hard work, and dedication.”

Boosting school spirit:  “When my class first came here, spirit was down.  The girls I’ve cheered with this year have done a good job of getting school spirit back up to where it needs to be, I think.”

Other school activities:  Student Council, FCCLA treasurer, Senior Class treasurer, First Priority, Homecoming Committee, Beta Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and track team.  She also serves with the youth praise team at Cross Point Baptist Church.

Her parents:  Steven and Alison Lindsey.

How she describes herself:  “Loud, sometimes crazy, but friendly.  I’m very easy to talk to, and I can talk for days.  Trustworthy, loyal, and hard-working.”

Her GPA:  3.5.

After high school:  “I’m leaning toward UAB.  I’m not certain, but that’s probably where I’ll end up.  I hope to cheer at college.  That would be great.”
