Congratulations to the high school track team. They brought home many medals from Lincoln Sectionals. Overall, the girls came in second place. The boys tied for fourth. Lydia Northam, Talisha Samaniego, Evelyn Cole and Allie Cohn qualified for state after running the 4x800m relay race. Jrey Colley, Brayden Buckner, Coby Caswell and Nate Huckaby also qualified for state in the same category.
More congratulations to the high school fishing and softball teams. The fishing team also qualified for state. The Lady Bulldog sluggers bested Oneonta and Etowah.
May 1 is not a holiday. It does, however, have historical and cultural significance. The practice of gathering flowers, dancing around the Maypole and the election of Queen of the May date back to ancient Roman times. Some cultures set a bonfire to symbolize the burning away of Winter and the start of Spring.
In modern day St. Clair County, we have our own way of celebrating the beginning of new life and warm weather.
Saturday, May 3, Greensport Marina is hosting its Fifth Annual Season Opening Crawfish Boil from noon until 3 p.m. Crawfish is $8 per pound. Sides are $4. The entry fee is $5. There will also be live music by Savannah J. Pre-ordering is strongly suggested. To pre-order a table, visit the Greensport app or call 205-505-0027. The address is 1000 Greensport, Ashville.
Another special day is Mother’s Day. It is often credited to the efforts of Ann Jarvis, a peace activist. Her mother died on the second Sunday in May. President Woodrow Wilson made it a holiday in 1914. Now, it is a $25 million a year holiday.
But you don’t have to spend that much to make mom happy. And Ashville has many opportunities to celebrate mom. There are restaurants and hair salons, and places to picnic.
The Lakeside Candle Company has many different kinds of scents from which to choose. But, in these parts, The Logan Martin Lake Collection might be the best option for St. Clair County moms. There is a variety from Lake Dayz to Dockside at night. One candle has a campfire scent. Aroma therapy is widely practiced and has much to recommend it.
Flowers are a popular gift as well. Send mom her favorite flowers. If she doesn’t have a favorite, try white carnations. They are the official flower of the holiday.
Have a great week, Ashville. Fill it with fun in the sun while we can.
